All It seems we are back to the old days of HMRC VAT Registration taking 6 weeks to process VAT registrations. As unhelpful as that is for new VAT registering businesses HMRC don't seem to really care. Here are some useful numbers VAT Enquiry line 0300 200 3700
VAT Registration Unit 0300 523 240
However if you call the VAT registration unit, and if you can even get through as the number is often permanently engaged, don't expect any useful help, they are often rude and very dismissive. Kind of sets the tone for new VAT businesses and what new VAT businesses can expect from HMRC. It is a shame as for quite a while it only took a matter of days or over night to get your VAT confirmations from HMRC. Anyone else finding HMRC VAT registration unit has slipped back into their old, slow, rude and unpleasant ways? If you want to know something the usual reference is to VAT Notice 700/1 "should I be registered for VAT?"Mike

Hi Mike
Yep VAT registration as the moment is extremely slow in my experience.
HMRC just don't seem to be able to get some of their services organised at all well.
But you can bet that they expect taxpayers to be well organised and submit and pay things on time otherwise out comes the old penalty stick that applied to almost everything now.
If you ever watch HMRC being grilled by the Government select committees about their quality and level of service go get an insight into how dismissive HMRC of everyone. Could not give a damn...
